as newtown and the rest of the nation try to make some sense out of this tragedy that took the lives of 20 children. i'm joined this hour by cnn's soledad o'brien. soledad? >> good morning to you, wolf. here's what we know right now. this morning, connecticut's chief medical examiner will be performing autopsies on the gunman, adam lanza and on his mother, as well, who was killed at her home. the results of those autopsies we're expecting to be released at a news conference that will be held later today. also today, president obama will be in newtown. he will speak at a memorial service. before that service, he will meet with members of the victims' families and also with first responders, as well. we know the names were made public last night. 12 girls, 8 boys killed in all. either 6 or 7 years old and 6 adults killed at the school, as well. they were all women. the medical examiner said the primary weapon in the massacre was a semi-automatic rifle that was found at the scene and every victim he examined, which were seven victims, had been hit more than once. one case 1 1 ti1 times. he pe

for their families. the news, coming as the community of newtown begins to mourn, the 26 victims who did not survive on friday t was an emotional memorial ceremony at newtown high school last night. president obama, sitting among the mourners, in the high school, joining community and religious leaders at the service. first though he met privately with each of the families of the victims. what, what an experience that must have been. and you could see, that he was visibly moved when he came out of on the stage and the entire nation has been moved by the events in -- newtown connecticut, 72 hours ago. sandy hook elementary will remain closed indefinitely, perhaps a month or perhaps permanently as the investigation continues and as they learn more about the gunman, adam lanza, what may have motivated this terrible unspeakable crime. rick leventhal joins us live from newtown with the latest on that investigation. rick? >> reporter: megyn, you may have heard paul vance say there were moving vans, collecting furniture of the classroom other equipment from the school so it can be moved to another school,

as has been said since the tragedy in newtown, when we look at past examples, there were two officers there, they did shoot back at columbine, it doesn't -- >> there were different protocols and the s.w.a.t. team waited outside, but colorado, speaking of columbine, passed a series of reform measures, including instant background checks, closing the gun shop -- but also allows conceal and carry, so people who pass certain tests and go through a certain test are allowed to carry. when there are so-called gun-free zones, they are actually gun-free with guards and controlled entrances. you don't just post a placard on the wall so the only people with guns are the crazies and criminals. >>> wayne lapierre said he -- he wasn't open to discussing the issue of clips and limiting the size in his interview on "meet the press" yet you do have those on the right, such as kay bailey hutchison, who said that should be part of the conversation. do you agree? >> i'm not here to defend or attack the nra or so-called gun lobby the i'm here about individual liberty. whether you call it so-called assault

's a terrifying situation, obviously for all parents, not even just in newtown and we will see you posted and new information as soon as we get it into our newsroom. bill: a little bit here from the "associated press." according to the superintendent speaking with reporters there at the office in newtown the district hats been on lockdown as a preventative measure. this is important now, the superintendent's secretary says that reports of a shooting are not co confirmed. we'll work through this together and gather information as we can. it just crossed the wires about seven minutes ago. be patient with us as we work through it. you mentioned a number of people escorted out of the building, perhaps that is the case. this bit of information from the superintendent's office -- alisyn: is comforting, that's comforting if it's not confirmed, where we're getting our information it's just a very tiny blurb from a website there that says that police are reporting a number of injured parties. let's hope that in the confusion of these early reports that that is not accurate, but, again, it's impossible to

will announce a task force led by vice president biden to develop a policy response to the newtown, connecticut shooting. the president is not expected to make any policy decisions but lay out a path forward on a process to come up with some policy proposals. on sunday though he did promise in newtown that he would use whatever power this office holds to prevent future tragedies. yesterday white house spokesman jay carney said that could include reexamining some gun laws. carney said the president supports senator dianne feinstein's attempt to revive the assault weapons ban as well as a ban on high-capacity magazines. he also supports closing the so-called gun show loophole. any effort though at new restrictions on guns will kick off a new fight in washington. the nra spent $18.6 million supporting and opposing candidates during the 2012 cycle. according to the sun life found case, 51% of the numbers of the new congress have received funding from the national rifle association's political action committee at some point in their political careers. the nra is known for staying silent, running out
